Core vs Xero

Core Platform vs Xero

Xero is polished and its unlimited-users model is a genuine strength. Its weak spot in South Africa is the entry tier: roughly 20 invoices a month before documents start saving as drafts. Here is the honest read.

  Core Platform Xero
Entry price R 99 a month, everything in. R 29 a month for your first three months if you are one of the first 50 businesses. No VAT. Rand pricing is shown VAT-inclusive and was not cleanly loadable at gather time; verify on Xero's SA page. Tiers run Ignite, Grow, Comprehensive, Ultimate.
Invoice limit Unlimited invoices and quotes. No monthly or yearly cap. The entry tier (Ignite) caps you at roughly 20 invoices and quotes a month. Over the limit, they save as drafts.
Users Unlimited users on one flat price. No per-seat billing. Unlimited users on every plan. This is a real Xero strength and a fair draw with Core.
One ledger Every invoice, payment and credit note posts to a real double-entry ledger from day one. Switch on Core Accounting and the books are already up to date. Full double-entry accounting.
SA payment links Paystack, NjiaPay and PayFast pay-links on every invoice. Through third-party add-ons rather than built in.
VAT VAT-aware documents today. The VAT201 return engine is built into Core Accounting for when you register. VAT returns supported.
Bank Bank statement import and reconciliation (OFX, QFX and CSV). Live bank feeds are on the roadmap. Live bank feeds and reconciliation.
SA-native Built in South Africa: ZAR, SARS PAYE and UIF payroll, Bob Go couriers, POPIA-aware. A global product with a South African edition. SARS payroll needs a third-party add-on.
Multi-currency ZAR only today. If you invoice in foreign currency, Core is not the tool for you yet. Multi-currency on the higher tiers.
Moving in One-click importers from Zoho, Xero, QuickBooks and Sage CSV exports. A large app marketplace and established importers.

Competitor pricing and features were gathered in July 2026 from public South African pricing pages and may have changed since. Verify the current details with the vendor before you decide. Figures marked approximate were not cleanly published in rand at gather time.

Who should switch to Core

  • The Ignite 20-invoice monthly cap keeps pushing you to a pricier tier just to send invoices.
  • You want SA payment rails and SARS payroll in the box, not bolted on with add-ons.
  • You would rather one flat price than climb Xero's tier ladder as you grow.

Who should stay on Xero

You bill in foreign currency

Xero handles multi-currency on its higher tiers. Core is ZAR only today, so an import or export business should stay on Xero for now.

You need live bank feeds today

Xero's live feeds are mature. Core does statement import and reconciliation now, with live feeds on the roadmap. If daily automatic feeds are non-negotiable, that gap matters.

You depend on the add-on marketplace

Xero's ecosystem is deep. If your business runs on a specific chain of Xero-connected apps, Core will not replace all of it yet.

Core Platform is in Early Access and does not do everything the big incumbents do yet. The best way to decide is to run it in parallel for a cycle. Nothing forces a hard cutover.

Questions

What is the catch with Xero's cheapest plan?
The entry tier (Ignite) caps you at around 20 invoices and quotes a month. Past that, new documents save as drafts until the next month or until you upgrade. If you invoice more than that, the entry price is not really your price.
Does Core have unlimited users like Xero?
Yes. Both Core and Xero give you unlimited users, so this one is a fair draw. Core's edge is no invoice cap and South African payment rails and payroll built in.
Can I import my Xero data?
Yes. Core imports Xero CSV exports (contacts, invoices, credit notes, payments), flagged as historical so they do not double-count against opening balances.
